Biography
The Jamaican Association of Manitoba Inc. (JAM) is a dynamic and community-driven non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and celebrating Jamaican culture while fostering inclusivity and support for Jamaicans and other Caribbean communities in Manitoba. Established in 1982, JAM has been a pillar of strength for its members, offering cultural, social, and educational programs designed to assist with newcomer integration, promote cultural awareness, and build a strong sense of community. The association provides a welcoming space where individuals can connect, celebrate, and contribute to the broader multicultural landscape of Manitoba.
JAM operates from its cultural centre, a 6,534-square-foot facility located at 1098 Winnipeg Avenue in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This centre serves as the heart of the association’s activities, offering event spaces, educational workshops, and support services to its members and the wider community. Over the years, JAM has established itself as a trusted and influential organization, hosting key cultural events, collaborating with like-minded organizations, and providing much-needed resources for Jamaicans settling in Canada.
History & Founding
The Jamaican Association of Manitoba was founded in November 1982 by a group of passionate individuals seeking to establish a space for cultural preservation and community support. Initially, the association operated without a permanent location, utilizing shared spaces and renting facilities for meetings, events, and programs. However, as the membership grew and the need for a dedicated space became evident, JAM undertook efforts to acquire its own facility.
In August 1993, JAM successfully purchased its current cultural centre at 1098 Winnipeg Avenue. The decision to invest in this property was driven by several key factors, including ideal zoning, accessible transportation, ample parking, and sufficient space for community activities. This milestone allowed the organization to expand its services, create a stable home for cultural programming, and foster a stronger sense of belonging within the Jamaican and Caribbean communities in Manitoba.
